Our Story

Go back and fetch what you left behind.

Sankofa is an Akan word — roughly, go back and fetch what you left behind. It seemed like the right name for a shop built on the idea that the food you grew up with shouldn't be a two-hour round trip away.

We opened because the closest place to find proper shea butter, black soap, or a bag of egusi meant driving across town. We wanted Piedmont Heights to have its own aisle of home.

Everything on our shelves is chosen the same way: a customer asks for it, we track it down, and if it's good, it stays. That's why our selection keeps growing — spices from West Africa, produce sourced weekly, and beauty staples that actually work.

We're a small, family-run shop. If you don't see us behind the counter, we're probably in the back, restocking.
